Getting The Title Right: Optimizing For Success

You already know that the title of your articles, web pages, and blog posts need to be attention getting so you can attract readers. But there is something else you may not have known: the title is instrumental in helping you improve your SEO results. Let’s take a look at the following tips that will help give you a much needed boost to your results.

First, you have to think about the length of your title. Google spiders only look at so much content before moving on. In the case of titles, they tend to only look at the first 66 characters. Furthermore, most SEO experts recommend titles of less than 100 characters anyway. The title for this blog includes 47 characters (if you include the spaces). That gives you some idea of the length we’re talking about.

Second, you need to have your keyword in your title. If you’re optimizing using multiple keywords, only one of them needs to be in the title. However, make sure the second keyword is located near the beginning of your first paragraph. You want to make sure the search engine spiders notice it, too.

Third, when you are placing your keyword in the title, it’s a good idea to put it as close to the beginning as possible. This isn’t always going to be possible but it’s a good rule to try and meet regularly. After all, you want the search engines to notice your keyword so don’t bury it in with the rest of the title.

Finally, remember to do some testing with your content titles. Write up several choices and switch them out if you’re not pulling in the search engine results or the readership you had hoped for. Just make sure each of these new titles meets the requirements above.
