Don’t be an “Empty Nest” Site
by admin on Jan.04, 2010, under Misc
You want to establish a site that turns a profit but you don’t necessarily have a product to sell and maybe affiliate marketing isn’t your cup of tea. Another option is to make money from advertising but that either requires a good traffic numbers or a large number of web sites on which to place the ads. This is the situation that so often leads to so-called Empty Nest sites. Although these sites do tend to rank in search engine results, they very likely don’t have a long future.
Empty Nest Explained
An Empty Nest site is one that contains no legitimate content but promises that it does. For example, if you’re doing a search for hotels in Orlando, you might turn up many of these sites. They may promise to have reviews or information about the hotels available or about a specific hotel in the area, but they have nothing but messages that you can “be the first to write a review” or they are full of pop up ads.
These sites are some of the easiest to create and can be created in large quantities with little effort. However, they are not the best route to take for search engine success even if you are only interested in selling advertising space.
Smarter Alternatives
Before you follow the footsteps of these mass marketers, here are some strategies that can help you create a profitable and useful web site:
- Create valuable content for site visitors – The best way to bring traffic to your site is by offering content they want to read and by continuing to update that content frequently.
- Do not promise what you cannot deliver – Make sure that you do not give potential visitors a false impression of what your site has to offer. If they arrive at your site to find no content, they will not stay long enough to click on any of the ads and eventually advertisers will move their ads elsewhere
- Choose advertisers carefully – While you may want to sell the ad space quickly, don’t rush ahead and just work with anyone. You want to choose advertisers that will fit well with your site’s purpose and audience.
Creating a better site may take more work but you will see the benefits down the road.
